Reading 4 (Aug 31)
Data Visualization
Goal
Traditional data exploration with summary stats and documentation are important, but what better means of "painting a picture" about your data than... painting a picture. Learn about some classic data visualizations, and discover some postmodern implementations online.
Instructions
Your assignment is to read the following chapters of our texts and to share one cool visualization you have found online. We will discuss classic and postmodern data visualization in class on Friday, Sep 2.
- Read Introduction to Data Mining (DM) chapter 3, section 3.3 (pages 105 - 131), Visualization.
- Have a glass of fine wine while you try to find cool examples of postmodern data visualizations online, and share at least one on Piazza.
- Read BD chapter 2, "The Beautiful People: Keeping Your Users in Mind When Designing Collection Methods." This is a real-world story about pragmatic approaches to increasing data quality, especially when gathered from humans.
What else can you tell us about visualization? (Who is Edward Tufte? Who is Hans Rosling and what was Gapminder?)
Grading criteria
- 2 Participation Points: You must participate in our discussion on Friday, Sep 2 and must post one visualization on Piazza before that time.
