Gain a cursory understanding of data mining, its purposes, common vocabulary and algorithms used. Be able to recognize what does not constitute data mining.
Our first assignment is to read the following four papers. We will discuss these in class on Friday, Aug 26.
You are not expected to understand the algorithms, so please don't freak out. Read the documents quickly.
The point of this assignment is to dive right into the world of data mining concepts and to provide you an example of what we will be able to fully comprehend and apply by the end of the semester.
